If Direct Democracy is the way working and poorer citizens of the U.S. can create a fairer society for themselves and their families, Active Humanism is a philosophy that supports and helps perpetuate Direct Democracy. The Institute is dedicated to the natural, common sense language of the human brain: to reason and logic. If there is a Creator, he, she, or it has given humans this remarkable brain as their major weapon of survival, and the armor with which to meet the challenges of life. It is, therefore, difficult to accept the improbable, implausable, illogical supernaturalism and unproven fantasies with which organized religions program their followers. In this respect we, of the Institute, are similar to all humanists, atheists, agnostics, skeptics, and other freethinkers. By free-thinking is meant the brave men and women who reject the myopic, repressive philosophies of organized religions. But unlike other free-thinking groups, we believe merely advocating the separation of church and state, and merely drawing attention to the repressive policies of organized religions isn't going to change the dangerously destructive directions religious, political, and economic leaders take the U.S. republic. It is believed the "reasoning power" of which people are so proud should be focused upon their political system, for it is only through political action that crucial changes to the destructive elements in a culture can be made. This is why we, of the Institute, call ourselves Active Humanists. We believe the unification of working and poorer citizens of the United States into a single-minded, aggressive political body is the only way to change the republic's power structure, and the only way to eliminate the poverty, ignorance, hunger and abuse that for thousands of years have smothered people and ignited the dream of true freedom. Dedication to such change is rooted in the historical knowledge that organized religion has been, and remains, the most suppressive institution on planet Earth. It is rooted in the knowledge that the men at the highest levels of hierarchical religions have lusted for wealth, have been as indifferent to the condition of ordinary citizens, have been as brutal, have tortured, and have murdered innocent people no less than have the elite families governing over hierarchical secular systms of rule. This dedication is also rooted in the historical knowledge that the Constitution of the United States was written by privileged Americans to protect their wealth and wealth-making opportunities from the farmers and craftspeople of the thirteen colonies. It is rooted in the knowledge that for more than 200 years the powers derived from this document plus from the social institutions created to protect wealth have allowed privileged individuals and families to abuse and repress America's common, working citizens with chains of law and debt. The drive for change is nurtured by hope that such changes as the American Institution of Direct Democracy recommends will produce a more equitable social environment for all American citizens, while protecting and preserving the republic and the planet for our children and our children's children.
